American Red Cross Facing Severe Blood Shortage

Red CrossThe COVID-19 virus has caused the cancellation of blood drives across the Commonwealth. There is an urgent need now for patients with chronic conditions and trauma, as well as ensuring an adequate blood and blood product supply going forward. The Governor has deemed “Blood and plasma donors and the employees of the organizations that operate and manage related activities” as an essential service. Support is needed to communicate to your residents that the need is urgent, and donating is a necessity to supply the hospitals with the blood our neighbors require. Donating blood is safe and people should not hesitate to give. In addition, there is a need for community blood drive sites in the eastern part of the state. Identifying donation sites is vital to meet the demand as we go forward. Local knowledge, suggestions of sites, and potential partners are crucial to meeting the needs of our neighbors who need blood and blood products.

To schedule a new blood drive contact Bill Forsyth at (617) 699-3808 or at email William.Forsyth@redcross.org. Those who are healthy, feeling well and eligible to give blood or platelets, are urged to make an appointment to donate as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The History of Tri-EPIC REPC

In the aftermath of 9/11/01, with community concern about biological terrorism and violence, Harrington Hospital took on a leadership role and became host to a coordinated effort of local police, fire and other emergency response services.

For the first time, services from Charlton, Sturbridge and Southbridge came together in a joint meeting in October 2001 with local political leaders, healthcare personnel and members of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency to review risks, to evaluate our abilities and learn to coordinate our responses.

This effort helped to create the Tri-EPIC Group. Since then the Group has been meeting monthly has grown to include the Town of Dudley and the other agencies and organizations listed above. This initial effort was one of the first in Massachusetts and is now used as a model for other communities in Massachusetts.

In 2008, Tri-EPIC was certified by the State Emergency Response Commission as a Regional Emergency Planning Committee. The group continues to work at improving the emergency response of our systems through grant funded training programs and enhancements to regional resources and assets. Tri-EPIC has become the driving force for preparedness and community response in the southern Worcester County region of Massachusetts.

In a major disaster, it might be several days before vital services are restored.

Our region of New England is exposed to a wide variety of hazards, both natural and man-made. Severe winter storms, flooding, fires, power outages, microbursts, HazMat, and missing persons are just some of the potential emergencies we may encounter.

Imagine that you have no electricity, no gas, no water, no TV, no Internet, and no telephone service. Imagine that all the businesses are closed and you are without any kind of emergency services. What will you do until help arrives?
